Human beings were not meant to sit in little cubicles staring at computer screens all day, filling out useless forms and listening to eight different bosses drone on about mission statements. – Peter Gibbons, Office Space (1999)
You know what’s funny? Imagine a person from the 1700’s was standing outside your Cube watching you work. For 8 hours they would see you sitting there with the slightest of movement – maybe a twitch here and there, and your fingers going up and down on a strange board. Imagine their shock when they are told that you are “working”. How could someone who is sitting perfectly still all day like a rock be doing anything valuable! Step back a bit and think about this. We sit at our computers for at least 8 hours a day. We then go home and sit there and stare at a TV for the rest of the night. If an alien were watching us, we probably look like the laziest beings in the universe!
It makes you think about the Peter Gibbons quote mentioned above. We aren’t meant to spend our time on earth staring at an inanimate object for 40 years or having some pea-brain telling us what to do. You ever look around your office and think about how the other people can do it? You feel different and weird for not liking Cubicle life. After all, they seem happy?
Well, I hate to tell you this, but they are drones. Many people are happy doing anything that gives them a paycheck. They will spend their time on earth waking up each day to sit at their desk and try to please their “boss”. WE are different. We sit at the desk each day but it’s not to please our boss. We realize we are the boss of ourselves. Our desk job (or any job for that matter) is a means to an end. It’s something to do while we try to figure out the next best step on our path to greatness.
CubeSlacker is a place for us “types” of people to get together. So what – maybe we are called slackers. But it’s not because we are lazy. It’s because we dream the dream! Everyone else has let the dream go. We just want more!
You’d think enough of us together could actually do something great!
