If you can imagine it you can create it. If you can dream it, you can become it.
Ward, William Arthur

Have you ever sat in your cubicle and asked yourself, “What the hell am I doing here?” Well, this is a question I ask myself on a daily basis. When we are young we dream of what we would really like to do with our lives. For whatever reason though, whether it be parents telling you to be realistic in the type of career field you want to get into, or maybe the school you go to only offers certain degrees, many of us lose sight of “the dream” and pursue more sensible career paths.

I for instance entered the Computer Science field back when the .Com market was booming. There were promises of gigantic salaries and fancy cars given to anyone coming out with a degree in programming. By the time I finished my bachelor’s degree, the market completely cooled off. There were no longer any of these dream jobs left. I managed to find a job however and took it right away in fear of not finding any others.

I quickly learned that most of the working world is not what it’s cracked up to be. Crappy cubicle spaces with hardly enough room to swivel a chair. A-hole bosses who have no business managing anyone. Minimal human contact, and when contact occurs, it’s generally with some jackass who wants to give you a hard time. Low salaries. Hard work with no reward. No time to enjoy your life. Blah blah blah you know the deal! It all comes with the package when you are working for the man! All of this has driven me to find a way to live life and take care of myself “my way”.

I’ve taken attempts at following my dreams. Through many failures and semi-successes I have learned some valuable things. Some of these things are:

-You have to believe in yourself and your ideas. Even if no one else believes in you, you know you can do it.

-No idea is a stupid idea at first. Once you develop the idea and analyze it, then it can be called a stupid idea.

-Others are lazy. A large amount of people are bottom feeders. They have no motivation to do anything to better their lives. Some people are just scared and have no balls. Many will tell you your idea is silly because they are jealous that they can’t do anything but work their dead end job. A great quote regarding this is:

The world is moving so fast these days that the man who says it can't be done is generally interrupted by someone doing it.
Fosdick, Harry Emerson

-Great things often start small. Get customer number one – then go from there. Start something no matter how small it is, then develop it.

-Planning is a good thing – do it. A well developed plan will help you know where you are and where you are going. Think about future revenue opportunities and how you can expand your business.

-You’ve heard the expression, “You have to spend money to make money”. Well, it’s true, but if you use your head you can spend different resources such as your time and still develop your dream.

-If you’re dream is something other than starting your own business, start doing it! Offer to intern for free at a local recording studio. Start playing poker on the weekends and improve your game. Whatever it is, just do it! You aren’t getting any younger, and you never know what will happen the next day, so start now!

I’m nowhere near following my dream. But starting CubeSlacker is one step towards it. The dream was always in my head – just now I acted on it. I want you to take that next step in following your dream. If you need any help, post in our forum. If you have a great success, email us at CubeSlacker and share it with us, and it might appear on the site! Keep dreaming!
